The Electoral Commission has extended the national voter registration deadline to Friday, June 18 following the huge turnout on today of people willing to register.

"According to our field reports people especially in the urban centres remain unregistered up to date and as a result, we have provided for an additional four days which is our mop-up exercise,"Badru Kiggungu, the Electoral Commission chairman, announced at a press conference in Kampala, today, Monday, which was the last day of the first extension of the registration exercise which started on May 3. Initially the exercise had been scheduled to end on June 4. It was then extended to June 14 following the slow registration mainly due to technical reasons and the overwhelming voter turnout.

The extension is a big relief to many potential voters who were likely miss voting due to disgusting long queues that have been at the registration centres.

By last week, June10, the EC had reportedly registered 3,450,410 voters countrywide.

However, Kiggundu said there will be no further extension beyond Friday. Registration centres like at at Kololo Airstrip, Constitution Square and Kawempe remained with long queues of people scrambling to register by close of the deadline. There were similar queues Makerere University and her Business School at Nakawa of students waiting to be registered.

The registration exercise will be followed by the display of voter registers from July 20 to August 10.
